Objective:To compare the efficacy of topical and oral formulations of Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol), Yasmin (drospirenone) and ethinyl estradiol for the treatment of acne. Methods: Patients with a history of acne were randomly assigned to the combined or topical formulations of Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) or Yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) and to a control group (without any treatment) for a two-period clinical study.
Main outcome measures:A total of 90 patients were enrolled in the clinical study. The patients' medical records were reviewed.
Results:The mean age was 47.1 ± 11.8 years, with a female prevalence of 0.7%. In the combined (n = 120) and topical (n = 90) formulations, Yasmin (50.8 ± 6.2 mg/day) was more effective than Yasmin (56.2 ± 7.9 mg/day) in terms of efficacy (P = 0.03). The mean time to onset of acne, duration of acne and overall efficacy were comparable in the two formulations. The most effective method of acne treatment in patients with acne was the topical application. The mean time to onset of acne in the two formulations was 4.4 ± 1.3 months.
Conclusions:Both formulations are effective in the treatment of acne in female patients. The oral administration of the combination of Yasmin and Yasmin-ethinyl estradiol is more convenient and effective than the topical treatment.
